Under the objectives of South African mining charter, a leading platinum mining company was obliged to increase its Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) procurement. At the same time the company faced increasing expectations for job opportunities in its supply chain from the local communities. Responding to these pressures, the company undertook significant efforts to engage in a re-design of its supply-chain strategy. The company's efforts were enhanced by expanding its BEE and local supplier base, identifying new suppliers or spinning off non-core activities to BEE companies. The competitiveness of BEE companies was increased through training and capacity building, identifying business opportunities beyond the client's current operations and facilitating supplier access to finance.
